Before you arrive at the Inn or at least the day before you take this trip, check with the staff about whether there is a matinee playing at the Flat Rock Playhouse. See if it is a show you would be interested in seeing.

Carl Sandburg Home

  • Take a Left out of front parking lot.
  • Turn Left at 1st light (Bearcat Blvd.)
  • Turn Left at 1st light (Church St.)
  • Follow Church Street tintersection with Hwy. 176 (about 1 mile)
  • Go straight through intersection (road becomes NC 225S/ Greenville Hwy.)
  • Stay on NC 225 S for about 3 miles.
  • Turn Right at traffic light at Little River Road, go ¼ mile.
  • The Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site (aka Connemara) will be on your left.

At the Carl Sandburg Home

  • Take a leisurely walk around the lake.
  • Walk up the hill ttour the house (30-minute guided tour of the home includes over 65,000 artifacts on display. $3-$5 per person.)
  • Past the house is the goat farm where Mrs. Sandburg raised prize winning goats. You can still see goats here today.
  • There are many other trails here if you want a hike ask for a trail map before leaving the inn.

Little Rainbow Row

  • Take a right out of Carl Sandburg Parking lot back towards Greenville Hwy.
  • Take a Right ontGreenville Hwy.
  • Go about 1/10th of a mile.
  • Little Rainbow Row shops and restaurants will be on your left.

Eat lunch at …

  • Flat Rock Village Bakery
  • Hubba Hubba Smokehouse or
  • Dean’s Market & Deli

IF you made reservations for the Flat Rock Playhouse matinee (2 PM)

  • Turn around and head back North on Greenville Hwy for just over a tenth of a mile.
  • The Flat Rock Playhouse will be on your left.

Return Options

  • Head down Little River Road

If coming from Little Rainbow Row

  • Turn around and head North 1/10th of a mile and turn left (back towards Carl Sandburg Home)

If coming from Flat Rock Playhouse

  • They will send you out ontLittle River Road take a Right.
  • There are some old (1800’s) private homes on this stretch of road. Sometimes you can
  • catch glimpses of them through the trees.
  • Follow Little River Road tend (about 4 miles total)

Decision time (Right or Left? Name of Road changes at this intersection!)…

Direct return to the 1898 Waverly Inn

  • Turn Right onto Kanuga Road to head back towards Hendersonville.
  • Kanuga will bring you to downtown (about 4 miles)
  • Go through lights at Church St. & Main St.
  • Take a left onto King St. (One way heading North)
  • Inn will be up about 10 blocks on your Left.

OR

Scenic return to the 1898 Waverly Inn

  • Turn Left onto Crab Creek Road
  • Go about 6 miles to Holmes State Forest on Left.

This is an "educational" forest experience. There are identification markers along the trail to tell you about the plants and even some "talking trees".

  • Turn Right onto Crab Creek Road and follow back tHendersonville (about 10 miles).
  • Crab Creek Road turn to Kanuga Road at Little River intersection.
  • Go through lights at Church St. & Main St.
  • Take a left onto King St. (One way heading North)
  • Inn will be up about 10 blocks on your Left.
